The rest of the meeting was a blur. Derek came into the room with a couple of other shifters and hauled the dead witch out. Someone shoved the head, spine still attached, into a large black garbage bag. Towels were used to wipe up the blood, and they casually sprayed cleaning solution on the table to remove the red tint. They moved as if this was something they did all the time.

I guess that was what he did for Henry.

Nobody batted an eye as they dragged out the body. I tried to focus on what was being said and scribbled nonsense words on my paper. The problem was, there wasn’t much to say.

The Council agreed that they wanted the vampire king gone, but to do that, they had to figure out who was killing the vampires.

Nobody had a lead.

“Do you want help on patrols in your territory?” The fae male asked the vampires.

“I’m not sure our people would take kindly to having outsiders watching us,” she said.

“We’re all in danger with the king here. What happened to Gavin could be any of us,” Henry pointed out. “He’s already got several of his blood suckers stationed at my home round the clock.”

“He sent one to monitor us,” the female vampire said. “And we are guessing there’s a few more we don’t know of who report to him. He doesn’t even trust his own kind.”

“We can’t afford to keep finding these bodies,” Henry said.

“We can’t afford for it to stop before we catch the killer, either,” the fae male said. “Not that I want more death, but if the killer gets wind of this and remains hidden, we run the risk of having a new king in town for a long while.”

“I’ve heard the stories of what it was like under his rule,” the female witch said. “I’m not immortal. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life under that kind of terror.”

My chest tightened. What was she talking about? We’d all grown up hearing how dangerous vampires were, but I always figured that was because I was in wolf shifter territory. Even now, the vampires didn’t get along with us. But what had things been like here when a vampire had ruled all the supernaturals?

“You’re right,” the male vampire said. “We need help. The killer is clearly taking our people from our territory and dropping them in yours. We could use increased eyes in both territories.”

“I can send my people in if you’ll assure me of their safety,” the fae male said.

The male vampire nodded. “You have my word.”

“We can contribute to the patrols in the shifter territory,” the witch said. “And if you agree, I can send a team in to see if we can find any traces of magic in the places you discovered the bodies.”

Henry nodded. “You have safe passage through our land.”

“We are running out of time,” the female vampire said. “The king can go months without feeding, but his bloodlust is legendary. Those he travels with are among the most ancient of our kind.
